And I, Francis
And I, Francis is a book that combines writing and visual art in an unusual way. The artwork is narrative in intent, and the written narrative responds to and illuminates the artwork. It is a union of the two media into one expressive whole.
The text is a fictionalized treatment of seven principal events in the life of Francis of Assisi. Francis himself wrote scarcely anything, but in this book he tells the story of his life in a voice that one can readily imagine Francis using.
The artwork, consisting of seven paintings and seven linoleum block prints, owes its inspiration to the work of Giotto and Cimabue. Like the text, it also portrays events of Francis’s life from the perspective of Francis himself.
